Children's Optical broke ground in the trade over five decades ago in Buffalo, New York. Opening first one, then a second store, Joseph Schulgasser innovated the practice of serving younger children specifically, a rarity among opticians at the time.
After a few years, he moved his family to Cleveland to find better schooling for his eldest child, opened his first store here, and for years after proceeded to commute between Cleveland and Buffalo every week to serve all his customers... finally migrating fully to Cleveland in 1973, and continued to build his specialty of service to children.
FYI: (Although no longer doing this) for over 30 years he single-handedly supplied dozens of other opticians in Cleveland their prescriptions from his in-house lab; you may have actually been his customer without knowing it..!
Today, like it's almost always been, Joe works alone, offering courteous, knowledgeable service to all; while some businesses boast about their "experience" by adding up a few years here and there from each current employee, Children's Optical, in the guise of it's owner/operator, truly does have over five decades of experience in the optical trade.
Curious about the photo? Go look in person - painted a few years back by a (clearly talented) local artist and happy customer, it hangs on the wall at Children's Optical, a clear "review" of a local business supporting and supported by Cleveland.
